Denomination Differences

Reformed vs. Presbyterian Beliefs

Presbyterian and Reformed churches are typically almost identical. They both derive their doctrines and practice from the Westminster Standards, so they agree on almost every issue. Both are typically Reformed in doctrine and hold to the five points of Calvinism. This means both believe in the doctrine of predestination, which holds that God has predetermined who will be saved and who will not.

However, there are a few key differences between Presbyterian and Reformed churches. One of the main differences is that Presbyterian churches follow a presbyterian form of church governance, in which church leaders are elected by the congregation and are responsible for making decisions for the church as a whole. Reformed churches, on the other hand, may follow a variety of different forms of church governance, including congregational, presbyterian, or episcopal.

Presbyterian churches are more distinguished by their governance, and Reformed churches are more distinguished by their doctrine. As Reformed churches may follow a variety of church organizational structures, Presbyterian churches are often more liberal on their doctrines, especially regarding some social issues like sex and marriage.

Another difference between Presbyterian and Reformed churches is their approach to worship. Presbyterian churches tend to follow a more formal, liturgical style of worship, while Reformed churches may have a more relaxed and informal approach to worship.

Overall, Presbyterian and Reformed churches share much history and overlap. However, they are now mostly separate traditions and have their own distinctives.
